This is a very fine fossil fish. It is a complete Diplomystus dentatus from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil herring is very distinct and has nice detail preserved. The bone structure of the fish is wonderfully defined - the eye socket of the fish is easily seen, and the upturned mouth adds a certain charm. The brown color of the fish contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well showcased on the squared plate of shale. This is a very nice example of Diplomystus from the Green River Formation.
