Here is a very attractive fossil fish. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This fish exhibits wonderful detail. The bone structure is well preserved, and the fins are easily seen. The eye socket of the fish is clearly defined, and even the tip of the mouth is present. The fish has great orangish coloration and contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on the large plate of shale. This is a very fine example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
