Here is a very attractive fossil fish. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This fish exhibits wonderful detail. The bone structure is well preserved, and the fins are easily seen. The eye socket of the fish is clearly defined, and even the scale pattern is somewhat noticeable. The fish has great orangish coloration and contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The fossil is well centered on the squared plate of shale. This is a very fine example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
