Here is a fabulous enigmatic fossil from a classic location. This is Esconichthys apopyris from the Pennsylvanian of Illinois. This famous site (Pit 11) has been closed to collecting for a number of years. This fossil is thought to be the larval form of a lungfish, but its exact taxonomic affinities are still under discussion. It has even been proposed that these ''blades'' are larval amphibians. The genus name comes from ESCONI, the acronym for Earth Science Club of Northern Illinois. The fossil is well preserved in a siderite concretion. The fish exhibits fine detail - the head, body, fins, and HUGE eye of the fish are wonderfully displayed. The fossil has great natural color and contrast and is well showcased in the oval concretion. This is a top quality example of this strange animal from Mazon Creek.

This fossil was collected and obtained legally, and is also being sold legally.
