This is a very rare fish fossil. It is an extrenal plate from a Devonian Placoderm from Sylvania, Ohio. This primitive fish had an external bony skeleton covering the head and thoracic regions. The Placoderms also had functional jaws. Placoderm fish became extinct at the end of the Devonian Period. This bony plate has excellent detail preserved - just look at the pattern of reticulation! This is one of the few examples of these plates that we've seen from the Silica Shale. This is a great Placoderm plate from a site much more well known for trilobites.
