Here is a very attractive fossil fish. This is Knightia humilis from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This fish exhibits wonderful detail. The bone structure is well preserved and the fins are easily seen. The eye socket of the fish is clearly defined, and even the scale pattern is noticeable. The fish has great, natural, orangish-brown color and contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. It is extremely well centered on the oval plate of shale. This is a fine example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
