Here is an unusual fish from the Green River Shale. This wide-bodied fish is Knightia alta from the Eocene of Wyoming. This fossil fish is complete and exhibits excellent detail. The bone structure is nicely displayed and the fins are well preserved. The eye socket of the fish is easily seen and the scale pattern is even preserved on this specimen. The fish has great, natural color and contrasts well with the light-colored matrix. It is almost perfectly centered on the oval plate of shale. This is a very fine example of this uncommon fossil herring from the Eocene.
