Here is a very unusual fossil fish from the Green River Formation. This wide-bodied fish is Knightia alta. Very few of these fish are found in the fossil lake deposits. This fossil exhibits fine detail. The eye socket is easily seen and the large gill cover is quite evident. The bone structure is well preserved and the fins are nicely displayed. The fish has rich, brown color that contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. It is almost perfectly centered on the oval plate of matrix. This is a very nice specimen of a rare species of fish from the Eocene of Wyoming.
